Parking your bike
Most educational establishments have facilities to park bikes but they are not always sheltered from the rain. Same thing for student residences. Contact them for further information.
If you are looking for accommodation in the city, think of what you will do with your bike if there is nothing safe outside to lock it to and you cannot take it inside or in a courtyard. Bicycle park areas are available in some Lyon Parc Auto car parks.
Cycle ways
Well
the situation is far from being perfect but the districts of the urban area are making efforts to improve it. Do not be surprised to see the lane you are on disappear suddenly in the middle of a crossroads. The Grand Lyon guide has a map of cycle ways.
Note : Le Parc de la Tête dOr, although situated between two cycle ways, forbids cycling from 13h30 to 19h00. You will have to by-pass the park or go through it on foot.
Your bike and public transport
Bikes and TCL: Bikes are not allowed on buses and subways. They are allowed free of charge outside rush hours on the funicular and the C lane of the metro. And for the tramway, bikes are allowed on the following hours : monday to saturday : before 7h a.m/9h to 12h/14h to 16h30/after 19h30, sunday all the day.
Bikes and trains : They are also allowed free of charge on all local network trains (TER Rhône-Alpes). In other trains conditions may vary. More informations.
What about roller skating ?
That is also possible if you have the equipment and good balance. From a legal point-of-view, roller-skaters are likened to pedestrians, with the same rights and obligations. Most of Lyon pavements are smooth and large enough, the main obstacle remains dog excrement
Skates are not allowed on public transport.
