Discover Lyon, a site of world heritage

On 5 December 1998 the historic area of Lyon was accorded World Humanity Heritage status. The area includes three districts : the Croix Rousse, Old Lyon and La Presqu’île.

The two main criteria that led to this classification as part of Humanity’s World Heritage were the continuity of habitation of the three areas for more than two millennia and the exceptional way in which Lyon illustrates progress and evolution in architectural design.

Old Lyon combines the ancient site of Lugdunum (the Fourvière amphitheatre) and the Renaissance district around the Saint Jean cathedral.

The Croix Rousse was born in the 19th century and is composed of the houses lived in by the “Canuts” - silk makers. These homes have traditional French wooden ceilings.

The traboules in Lyon, indoor passageways making it possible to pass from one street to another without going outside, are full of architectural curiosities: spiral stairs, courtyards opening on to first floor gardens, and much more. These passageways can mainly be found in Old Lyon and the Croix Rousse. They were used to shelter the silk makers during their revolution, but they were also of vital importance for the members of the Resistance during the Occupation of France in the Second World War.
