Long-stay study visa (except for EC citizens)

You will need this visa in order to be able to enrol definitively in your chosen higher education establishment, as well as to obtain your “carte de séjour”.
The visa can only be obtained in your country of origin, on presentation of the admission agreement sent to you by a higher education establishment and on proof of sufficient income (approximately 2 800 F per month).
If you have come to France in order to explore the possibilities, you will therefore have to return to your country of origin in order to obtain the visa.

ISM do translations of all kinds of documents, particularly administrative and legal, in more than 60 languages. Tariffs : official documents (birth certificates and so on) : 15 euros per document. Driving licence : 19 euros. Other documents (diplomas and so on) : 11,50 euros per 100 words (minimum 23 euros for 200 words).

Work and training course

The Autorisation Provisoire de Travail (APT) is a document which is necessary for foreign students who want to work in France. The student must have a "student" temporary carte de séjour and be registered in a higher education establishment. The student must be able to supply all documents which prove he can be hire.

Students exempted from APT
- students amenable to the European Union or a country of the European
economic Area, Andorrans and Monegasques.
- the Gabonese, subject to the visa from the Departmental Director of work, employment
and vocational training (Directeur Départemental du Travail de l’Emploi et de la Formation Professionnelle, DDTEFP).

Procedure for obtaining the APT
You must go to Departmental Management Work, Employment and Vocational training (Direction Départementale du Travail, de l'Emploi et de la Formation Professionnelle, DDTEFP), with the
following documents :
- Your temporary residence permit (Carte de séjour) ranking "student" or receipt of request
- Your student card
- a promise of recruiting from the employer or contract of employment or an engagement
in a company of interim work
- a letter explaining your request

Characteristics of the APT
- the working hours are limited to 16 a week and the APT is valid for 9 months maximum.
- It is however possible to work full-time for 3 months
maximum (as long as the total over the year remains always lower than
850 hours).
- You will have to ask for a new APT for each new contract of
employment.
- the maximum duration of an APT is nine months; it is
renewable.
- a APT may be obtained very quickly (1 to 2 days) if all
the required documents are provided

Training courses : The students subjected to the APT must also request
an authorization to carry out a training course within the framework
of their studies. In addition to the student card and the residence
permit, it is necessary to provide (original and copies):
- the convention of training course,
- a letter of the University or school attesting the obligatory character of the training course.

Health

Health insurance and social cover
If you are aged under 28, you can take advantage of the Student Social Security system, regardless of your nationality. You will be registered at the same time as you enrol in your educational establishment.

If you are aged over 28, you will have to take out personal health insurance, either from the Caisse Primaire d’Assurance Maladie (CPAM)
- or from a private insurance company.
- or to require to your social center, your affiliation to the Couverture Maladie Universelle (CMU).
The cost of the affiliation will dependra of your private means.
The cost of personal health insurance from the CPAM is approximately
3 500 F per quarter.

Obligatory medical visit
All foreign students with a long stay study visa (except holders of grant awarded by the French government) must have a medical visit. This can be performed in your country of origin with a doctor who is approved by the French embassy. In France, the Office des Migrations Internationales (OMI) is responsible for this visit, which costs 360 F.
