You must be organized !
In addition to applications made to the CROUS or to the HLM offices, you can choose to look for yourself an accommodation for rent, alone or with several people. If you go through an estate agency, a property manager (a "régie") or directly private, some steps are necessary. You can also contact private student residences.
In every case, you must organize your search and provide for some expenses at the signing of the lease (fees, deposit
) as well as expenses for electricity, phone... You must also provide for bills and for the council tax (local tax).

Where to find classifieds
Pay attention to your search :
Make sure of the rent sum inclusive. Some classifieds or contacts will give you rents exclusive, which is not the accurate sum you will pay. Expenses can represent a considerable percentage of your rent.
Never pay for a list of rentals, as most of the units will already have been rented out. You may pay from 76 to 153 euros for a file of classifieds and not find any accommodation.
Newspaper advertisements for accommodation
- Bonjour le 69 (free, available from 10 place Bellecour).
- Top Affaires (free, available from 50 rue de la République).
- Le Progrès, Le Dauphiné, Lyon Matin and Lyon Figaro all have a property section on Mondays. It is not worth buying all of them since they all have the same ads.
